Steven John Waiswa has appeared in court in Nairobi facing charges linked to an alleged Sh223 million gold fraud.

Prosecutors told the court that on March 31, 2024, and May 30, 2024, within Nairobi City County, Waiswa and others allegedly conspired to steal USD 1,271,200.74, about Sh223,756,000, from Tanner Caldwell Cook. The accused allegedly claimed he was in a position to sell 2,820 kilograms of gold. Investigators say the claim was false.

The charge sheet states the suspect acted jointly with other people who were not before the court. The prosecution terms the plan a conspiracy to commit a felony.

In a separate matter, Waiswa also faces a charge of obtaining money by false pretences under Section 313 of the Penal Code. Prosecutors repeated that between March 31 and May 30, 2024, he and others allegedly received the same USD 1,271,200.74 from Cook after presenting themselves as genuine gold sellers.

The case will proceed before the Nairobi court as scheduled.
