However, even more attention has been drawn to the arrest of Elias Kemboi Korir, a senior official of Women and Youth Against AIDS and Poverty (WAYAAP), a civil rights organisation.

Because of numerous fraudulent transactions that target businesses, authorities have been keeping an eye on Elias Kemboi Korir for years. According to allegations, Elias Korir took advantage of his position as a well-known member of WAYAAP, an NGO that bills itself as a nonprofit that supports underserved communities, to win over suppliers and companies.

He convinced suppliers to deliver goods worth millions of dollars through expertly crafted tender offers, but the NGO officials disappeared as soon as the deliveries were made. Korir and his team allegedly sold the goods in local markets rather than delivering them to communities that were at risk, as promised.

A significant case involved allegations of defrauding three suppliers of goods valued at over Sh32.8 million by Korir and his associate, Halima Samson Mwongela, who is also a WAYAAP official. The suppliers were left without anything after the delivery because their goods were sold elsewhere.

They were threatened and intimidated when they demanded payment, which prompted them to complain to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI).

The leadership of the NGO went into hiding, and the DCI’s Operation Support Unit began a manhunt. According to reports, Elias Kemboi tried to leave the country when he realised investigators were getting closer. When he was apprehended and detained at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA), his plan was foiled.

Elias Kemboi Korir is currently being held by the police and will be charged at the Milimani Law Courts. Other victims of the fraudulent NGO have been urged by authorities to come forward and report their cases to the DCI to potentially receive redress.
