The family of a Form Two student who passed away following an incident at St Mary’s Mumias Girls High School is preparing to take legal action against the institution for negligence.
The student named ‘Nicole’ reportedly collapsed unexpectedly, with her mother Gladys Omina claiming that the school failed to take timely action to address her condition.
Students had spent the previous night celebrating the results of the 2024 Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) examination, in which the school had achieved a mean score of 8.20.
The students, led by their principal and other teachers, had marched in the streets of Mumias town in ecstasy, dance, and jubilation.
On Saturday, Nicole collapsed during morning prep, and classmates helped her to the sick bay.
It is said that the family was only contacted when it was too late, with the school reportedly trying to suppress details surrounding the incident.
Sources close to the situation suggest that the school’s management has actively blocked the grieving family from gathering vital information, even resorting to removing the mother from the class WhatsApp group.
“We are going to take serious legal action against this school. Its management failed to act in time to save our daughter from dying,” said a parent
